Ogden Middle School: Academics

5th and 6th grade Reading

by Lynn Smith

September 14, 2006

One of your 5th and 6th grade students' assignments for Reading class will be to read and complete the quizzes for at least two Accelerated Reader books per quarter.  The scores from these quizzes will be part of the Reading grade.  Students may read and test as many AR books as they want during a quarter.   I will use their two best scores.

Students should find an Accelerated Reader book that is in their range.  In our middle school library, AR books have an orange label at the top left of the book with the book level and points numbers printed on it.  The Leonard A. Good Library also has AR books.

When students have selected a book, they should have it approved by me before they read it. Sometimes books may not be appropriate even though they are in the student's range.  The books must be read during the quarter that they plan to use the quiz grades.

If, after both books have been read and the quizzes taken, students may decide that they would like to replace one or both of the quiz scores, they may do so by reading another AR book and taking the quiz for it.  Again, I will use the two best scores.  Students may not retest over the same book.

In addition to they two quiz scores that will be part of the grade, students will earn points for each book that they read. At the end of the year, they will be able to "spend" their points at an activity.

This is a a long-term assignment, so students will want to plan carefully. A good goal would be to have one book read by midterm, and the second book read before the end of the quarter.  The sooner the two books are completed, the longer time students will have to replace their scores if they wish.

If you have questions, be sure to ask or email me.  Please encourage your students to read for enjoyment every day.
