Ogden Community High School and Ellsworth Community College have signed an articulation agreement this past summer and high school students will now have the opportunity to take a semester long masonry class in the Industrial Tech area.
Harold Hytrek is the Director of Masonry at Ellsworth Community College and he has worked hard at helping us get this course up and running. There is a huge demand for masons across the country and here in Iowa. Starting pay for masons coming out of Ellsworth's 36 week program is from $18 - $25 per hour.
Harold and/or three to four of his students will be coming to Ogden High School on Tuesdays of each week to assist in teaching the basics of masonry. The other days are spent practicing the techniques and learning masonry terminology and math.
According to Harold, Ogden is the first high school in the state to offer a semester-long course in masonry.
The objective for offering this class is to give students an exposure to what masonry involves and if they like the field and desire further training then they could go through the program at Ellsworth Community College.
