Snipe Hunting at Harrier Marsh
by John Knoot
April 24, 2008
Members of the OMS Nature Club paid a visit to Harrier Marsh on our most recent club day. The students witnessed spring migration highlighted by common snipe, many duck species, and a glimpse at the marsh's namesake: the Northern Harrier.
Periodic shrieks of surprise were heard amidst the cattails as students discovered garter snakes awakening from hibernation. Other interesting fins by club members included muskrat lodges, cricket frogs, burrowing crayfish, and animal skulls. Despite a 30 mph wind that made communication difficult, club members agreed that the marsh was one of our best adventures of the year.
