Super "A.R. Reading" Bowl

by Jannette Thrane

February 23, 2010

Students in grades 1-4 at Howe Elementary participated in an Accelerated Reading (A.R.) contest from Jan. 5 - Feb. 5. Each first grade classroom was paired with a fourth grade classroom to form a "football" team. Each second grade classroom was paired with a third classroom to form a "football" team. The teams were as follows:

4th and 1st grade teams:
Mrs. Lewiston/Mrs. Van Sickle
Mrs. Rude/Mrs. Hayes
Mrs. Swanson/Mrs. Lake

3rd and 2nd grade teams:
Mrs. Majoros/Mrs. Blair
Mrs. Nichols/Mrs. Mathews
Mrs. West/Mrs. Savits

For each A.R. point each team earned they moved their football one yard on a huge library bulletin board designed to look like a football field. The competitions were very close and all month classes were buzzing with book reading and quiz taking. Each and every student helped to make the contest a huge success and the 1st - 4th grade students earned over 1400 A.R. points total in 4 weeks (that's with several snow days thrown in there, too)!

Congratulations to the two winning teams! The winners of the 4th/1st grade competition were students in the classrooms of Mrs. Swanson/Mrs. Lake. They earned three touchdowns (338 A.R. points). The winners of the 3rd/2nd grade competition were students in the classrooms of Mrs. Nichols/Mrs. Mathews. They earned one touchdown (192 A.R. points).

Winning teams received chocolate cupcakes and a football pencil for their efforts. However, each student who gave their best effort for their team should be proud of their efforts! Way to go students of Howe Elementary!
