What is the Silver Cord?
The Silver Cord is awarded to graduating seniors that have completed 200 hours of volunteer
service during their high school career. The Silver Cord Program is designed to focus on the
importance of community service and to encourage students to invest in their own education
and their community on a regular basis during high school. Silver Cord recipients will receive a
silver cord to wear on their robes at graduation in recognition of their accomplishments.
Purpose:
The purpose of the Silver Cord program is to encourage volunteerism and allow students to
experience the joy of giving back to the community. Volunteering can provide a constructive use
of time, foster the exploration of career interests, support youth seeking employment and
college admission, and give new graduates the confidence to serve in leadership roles after
high school.
Documentation:
Students must log hours for all service activities on the Silver Cord Volunteer Log and
summarize each activity at the conclusion of the year on the Silver Cord Award Form. One form
will be used for each site or project, and a supervisor at the site must sign each form. Forms can
be submitted to the Ogden High School office at any time throughout the school year but must
be completed and turned in annually to receive credit for hours. Seniors must submit all Silver
Cord forms and documentation by April 15th. Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors must submit
all Silver Cord forms and documentation by the last day of school each year.
Summer Hours:
Service hours can begin the summer before their freshman year. Therefore, the day after 8th
grade, students can begin earning silver cord hours.
Acceptable/Non-Acceptable Hours:
Silver Cord hours will be earned by providing a service or meeting a clear need for a non-profit
agency, church, school, park, charity program, fundraiser, or community event. The service
should be “above and beyond” one’s usual scope of involvement. When in doubt, just ask.
